DUCKS |
Muscovys originated in Central & South America, but have spread in popularity through the South Pacific and South East Asia as an upscale dinner favorite. Their tender breast meat in the leanest of all breeds of duck, and probably the most flavorful. They are also among the largest of breeds, growing out at up to 10 lbs! As a domesticated pond duck, Muscovys are very quiet (non-quackers), and resilient to predators, tending to roost at night and possessing sharp claws on their webbed feet for defence. We breed several colors (green, chocolate, and greys). Ducks will lay several broods each year and will sit on virtually any breed of egg. |
Everybody knows "Donald Duck", therefore, the Peking duck is probably the most recognizable breed. Centuries ago this breed was domesticated in China while feeding on grain barges in the canals of Peking. Since the 12th century, roast Peking Duck has graced the table of Chinese Emperors as well as peasants. As pond ducks, they can lay up to 200 eggs per year. In addition, they are very human friendly to the point of spending as much time around the yard, as they do in the pond. |

CAYUGA |
The U.S.A. Duck! The Cayuga breed was domesticated from wild ducks in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, and is the only original American breed. Their striking iridescent green color, docile behavior, and broody (nesting) tendencies make them a favorite and unique choice for your pond. |
If you are into rich and delicious duck eggs, pay attention. This light brown bird can lay up to 220 eggs per year. Considered a rare breed, they are both a meat and production bird. Developed in England in the 1800's, they are very quiet and docile. They are a "stay at home duck" (can't fly) not very broody (don't sit on eggs). |
BUFF ORPINGTON |
MALLARD |
Mallards are thought to be the most abundant breed on earth. Although smaller that many popular breeds, most duck breeds are descendants of mallards. While very capable of flight, a little wing clipping now and then can keep these beauties on your pond. If you like to hear some quacking, these birds will accommodate you. |
BLUE SWEDISH (a.k.a. POLISH DUCK) |
The Swedish Duck is actually from the Pomerania region, in northwest Poland and Germany. At the time the breed was domesticated in the 1830's, this region was under Swedish control - that makes a Swedish duck from Poland! Stosh or Sven take your pick! This calm duck tops out st 7-8 pounds, and is the most winter hearty originating from the Baltic Sea region. I really don't see the "blue" in them, it is more of a slate grey in color with a white breast. They also come in black. |
